Sirius recently added Scotland’s Celtic Football Club to their lineup of World Class Soccer broadcasts, which also includes Chelsea, Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal and other top teams from the English Premier League, along with broadcasts of the UEFA Champions League. Sirius subcribers can hear every Celtic Scottish Premier League game live on SIRIUS Play-by-Play Ch. 126.

If Sirius wants soccer/football/futbol (call it what you want), what about the MLS? I don’t know the financials of the existing deals, but if Sirius is going to focus on soccer broadcasts, I think they should be actively pursuing the MLS, instead of European clubs. The MLS has been in the spotlight with their recent signing of David Beckham to the L.A. Galaxy. Beckham (without even playing) is selling tickets and the MLS is receiving some much needed publicity. The signing of an international star shows that the MLS is dedicated to making the league a success, and maybe Sirius can talk them into an affordable long-term deal.

I will let you know I’m a huge soccer fan. I have played soccer my whole life, including collegiate soccer, and I was even in Germany last summer for the World Cup. With that being said, I hope Sirius is not paying very much for the rights to these broadcasts because I can’t see them providing much of an influence on subscriber retention or subscriber acquisition.
